Two Great Teaching Concepts

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Great link from Philip Wadlers blog.

  • Whenever you state a new concept, definition, or theorem, (and better still, right before you do) give the SIMPLEST possible non-trivial example
  • Bruno Buchberger introduced the White-Box Black-Box Principle, asserting, like Solomon, that there is time for everything under Heaven. There is time to see the details, and work out, with full details, using pencil and paper, a simple non-trivial example. But there is also time to not-see-the-details. Having mastered the algorithm or concept or whatever, the student (and researcher!) should be allowed to use the computer for other examples.

I, Cringely – OSX and iPods

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Cringely says a lot of outragous things, but he always get me thinking.
His latest is, you shouldn’t need a mac to run OSX just an iPod.
I like the idea.

Boot OSX off a iPod
Every one of those iPods is a bootable drive. What if Apple introduces OS 10.5, its next super-duper operating system release, and at the same time starts loading FOR FREE the current operating system version — OS 10.4 — on every new iPod in a version that runs on generic Intel boxes? What if they also make 10.4 a free download through the iTunes Music Store?

Orrin Hatch: Bad Buisiness for Utah Tech

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

Connect :: Resource/Article :: Senator Orrin Hatch Encourages Stronger Patent Protection
Orrin said, “I have so much respect for UITA and for the high-tech industry in this state,” Hatch said. “The environment for innovation that exists here has critical ramifications for the entire nation. Utah ranks as one of the top three locations for new software and technology innovation within the United States. I take tremendous interest in what you are doing.”

I think he is taking interest in the state again, only because he has a serious challenger in 2006, Steve Urquhart. In true political fashion, Orrin attempts to ride the presidents coat tails through re-election.

I find this comment the most ironic. “The Utah high-tech industry is fortunate to have Senator Hatch’s tenure, experience, leadership and commitment,” said attendee Bill Aho, CEO of ClearPlay. Most of what Hatch has done in technology is create legislation that fuels lawsuits against content editing companies such as ClearPlay.
Hatch helps protect monopolistic, outdated, and failing business practices of large media conglomerates that refuse to serve the customer. In doing so he is stiffiling new inovation and high tech buisness development.

I want to hear what Orrin himself has to say about his voting record on technology. Mutual back patting with the president and form statements from staff saying how much he is doing for Utah breeds skepticism, not confidence. Something is wrong if catching a ride on Air Force One is a major political tactic for re-election.

  • Good list of the negative impact Orrin in the senate can have.
  • Comments on patent reform.

Up and Coming Geek in the Family

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

I was at a family reunion last week and found out that one of my cousins has been playing around with Linux lately. It’s nice to know I’m not the only geek in the family. Learning is about sharing. I have many smart friends that have mentored and taught me almost all I know about technology. I love to teach and help others learn. My cousin was having some troubles getting his Linksys WPC11 ver. 4 wireless card to work in linux. I explained to him that ver. 4 had a different chipset than the previous WPC11 cards. I then showed him how to use ndiswrapper to use the windows driver in linux and get on the net using his wireless card. Switching chip sets and not publishing drivers was a stupid move on Linksys’ part.So my words of encouragement today are to adopt an up and coming geek and show him/her the way. There isn’t anything much more rewarding than teaching.

As a side note Damian Conway is speaking in Orem, Utah tomorrow.
Damian is one of the top Perl hackers/gurus/speakers world wide.
Come and learn.

Cringley – Skype – New Startup

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

Robert Cringely is where I first heard about “Skype Cell Phones”. IPDrum is the company that Robert talks about. At Phil Windley’s CTO Breakfast last friday, this topic came up again. And then this morning I saw it on slashdot. Start-up slashes cost of international wireless – The Boston Globe – Boston.com – Technology – Business
Steve Gilmor has been calling Skype the next platform/Google for quite some time. This area is going to keep getting hotter. Are the telcos in trouble? Can dumping money into lobbying buy them out of this one? I don’t know.
